I was going to say that breaking into the local high school (which I did not even attend) on Friday nights in the 60's in order to steal cyber 6000 cycles to run a FORTRAN 66 program to solve SOMA cubes (an early Rubic's cube kind of thing) -- instead of cruising around trying to get laid like you're supposed to do on Friday nights when you're in high shcool -- was my nerdiest accomplishment.

But, alas, I can top that. On a fine Saturday last year, a beautiful sunny day in Silicon Valley, I spent 9 hours inside a building on the AOL campus participating in the Dojo hackathon. I did this voluntarily, as a grown man -- cannot claim teenage confusion or hormonal imbalance. It's so fucking pathetic I could cry. Oh well.
... this is dreamworld after all... it isn't? Shit.

"Nerd's Nerd" for the following reason:

I told them I had talked to Captain Crunch during my college days. Which is true. In my freshman year, I found one of his old webpages. Never amounted to anything other than a short back and forth of: "You're really the real Captain?", "Yes, yes I am.", "That is so cool!", "If you wish to continue this conversation, may I suggest you start using PGP?".

Now, to top this, I had to first explain why the good Captain was named such. And then had to explain that explanation. At which point all of the rest of the people on the team simply gave up attempting to out-nerd me.

Which brings us to Sunday night.

The leader of the Sunday night gaming group was telling everyone how great his new .gif animating software was and how stoked it make him now that he can do that easily and simply.

My brain's first response?

"If I were having to design that sort of functionality, how would I "animate" an image file?"

At which point it went about attempting to design the process for animating a .gif file.

Until I stopped it from going through with it.

Wrote a toy language... wait a minute... and wrote an emacs mode for the said language.

Also I corrected a CS teacher. She had said that the etymology of "algorithm" was algos, which meant other in greek and rythm. I'm serious, no further explanation. I've never seen someone so wrong and so pompous at the same time.

Had first post in slashdot stories a few times.

Haven't had $thousands in long distance bbs calls, mainly because I stuck with local BBS's.

I managed to get several articles to FP on k5.

Attended several science fiction cons. Highly recommend reading "Bimbos of the Death Sun" to anyone who's been to cons.

Had the person I was bragging to about #2 say to me that the word `concatenate' just happens to be in the academic text she's currently reading and now she doesn't have to look up the word because I've told her what it means.
