THIS one is amazing. I bet you could even get it published for real.
seriously. i'm not kidding. do it. i'm thinking this might be a calling for you: writing and illustrating children's books.
i was wondering what's happened to you recently; i'm glad it was this.
peace to littlestar and popsicle and you, my friends.

Of course, rationally, I know they're both ok; they're young, healthy, and I saw them this morning before I left for work.
But when did rationality ever have anything to do with it?-- This is not a psychotic episode. It is a cleansing moment of clarity.[ Parent ]

I remember feeling embarrassingly upset when my cat died.
But, dude, the burial scene - cut your grass.
And that, sir, just shows you are not English.
Of course, that's not necessarily a bad thing.
In nice middle class areas, definitely. You can't be seen to be lowering the tone of the area, my dear boy. I once was refused a renewal of a lease on a house because I hadn't mown the lawn often enough. I was moderately annoyed.
I live in a flat, now.

Heh. That's how I talk to my kids. Not gruesome -- just true.
+1 - FP again.

(beautiful story btw)

I think sometimes snickering/grinning can be an alternate reaction to being emotionally or socially uncomfortable. I also grin like an idiot in social situations that make me nervous.

On the other hand, if you wrote specialty books such as, "Why daddy hits mommy" and stuff like that, you could write them both for kids that want answers to help them through an abusive situation, and also to sell to people on the internet that find the existence of such books humorous.- - - - - That's what I always say about you, boz, you have a good memory for random facts about pussy. -- joh3n[ Parent ]

I think the surrealism would be enough to warp even the most weirdly wired of hearts.
It may not sound like it, but its a compliment.

But letting the cat sleep in the crib?!?! I'm pretty sure any publisher would make you take that out! Isn't it supposed to be a pretty big health risk? Rock Hard Abs are just a sw-sw-swivel away!
Maybe that's how it will play out at the Final Trumpet for us. The Lord will raise the bodies of the righteous, through the medium of His bugs and birds. I'm glad I'm not a praying sort.
Great book, but if it pans out, won't you have to start buying a lot of sickly pets to keep the series going?- Metus amatores matrum compescit, non clementia.

You might shoot for just a wee bit more consistency of style and polish - but at the same time, keep the intentionally contrasting styles, like the diagram-atic one of kitty under the ground.
I personally dislike digitally blurred backgrounds, but it's a minor thing. And the 8th drawing is black & white, but I would've liked to see it in brilliant shaded colour like the earlier ones. This would make the sepia-toned baby pictures work a bit better I think. Anyhow, just my $0.02.[ Parent ]
I think Littlestar looks a bit weird in GtK_08.jpg, but I do concede that broads do get kind of funny looking when they're knocked up.

i'm so glad that that corporate universe hasn't gotten you down. we need more storytellers like you!
now, if you could only make a fortune on it....let's work on that, shall we HUSI???
Seriously though, it's beautiful. I agre with spacejack about the second last panel. I don't know if it was intentional but the way the cardinal evokes the phoenix goes wonderfully with the story.
And the panel of you with the cat on your head is an excellent self portrait (though the rendition of Astra in that panel is not nearly as faithful as the one in the last panel).
And, though I can tell this was a labor of love rather than a professional endeavor, you may find that this story has a wider potential market than the existential slice of life in 17 Pictures.---I don't think anyone's ever really died from smoking. --ni

The only things I don't like are the drawing of Astra when she's pregnant-- there's something wrong with her face and the way it's drawn. Unfortunately I can't tell you what, but it doesn't feel right.
The second last drawing seems a little empty. Perhaps some trees or something in the foreground to frame the birds flying away would have worked.
But I won't dote on the bad without mentioning the good, which is pretty much everything but the above.
I really like the black-and-white drawing about the bugs eating the body. It has sort of a science-textbook feel and avoids all of the gruesomeness that such a drawing might entail, but it still gets the point across very well. The flower at the top right is neat.
popsicle's hair in the last drawing is fascinating in the way that the realistic and the cartoony forms are unified. I could look at it for hours. In fact, the switching between stylized and realistic drawing is one of the strengths of this piece.
As always, kudos to you sir. ----- imagine dancing banana here

I have tried to draw faces before and this is usually what happens. All the parts are right, everything seems to be going swimmingly, but when you stop and look you just know that something is horribly and utterly wrong.
My mother, who is excellent at drawing from memory, can often take my drawing, add a smidge of a line around the nose, or position the eye three millimetres up or down, and all of a sudden the face snaps back into reality. It's terribly frustrating. ----- imagine dancing banana here[ Parent ]
Point the first, you made my eyes water at work, which is embarassing.
Point the second, you made me want to go pet my kitty and puppy, but they're ten miles away
Good work though. I'm glad my pets are young; I'm woefully unprepared for this sort of thing. They're both about two.
And this is fantastic, by the way. 17 Drawings was awesome. This is even better. You are truly a Canadian icon.
We were very open about his death and let her see him before he was lowered into his grave. We had a tearful little ceremony where we said good bye and cried lots of tears. She still goes out to his grave to talk and sing to him. She talks about him as if he's still a part of the family.
"Goodbye Kitty" has been selected several times since we got it as the Book of the Night. She also likes "17 Drawings but thinks your daughter should be Littlestar because she's the littlest, such is the logic of a child.
Your drawings are great, the text is very readable -- and believe me a lot of kids books croak when you try to read them outloud. You're a hit with adults and kids, keep up the good work.
Some of those illustrations were beautiful.
