My. What an interesting point you make there... Why, one could surmise that the net is a place to hang out for some people, and that this only exacerbates the FT problem, since the FT doesn't have to go to as much effort to follow you from place to place. Still, what's the solution?

there are two realistic possibilities...

a) Learn to ignore the people who annoy you. It's not fair that you have to do this if they are targeting you specifically, but it can be worthwhile if you like the good people in $community enough. Letting someone drive you away from a place you enjoy is giving them undue power over you. I don't know you, I read your HuSi diary but I don't think I post in it... but you seem like a decent person. It would be a shame if you felt you had to go to Plan B.

b) Go to a radically new place on the net and start a new online life. I've done it before, it's not that hard really, the net is very fragmented, plenty of places you won't be found if you don't want to be. Starting new is kind of sad, leaving things behind, but it can be liberating too.

I can't speak for anyone else, but online communities for me tend to take the following cycle.

1)You find a group centered around an interest that you have
2)The group you find is fun, so you make a place for yourself
3)People drift off, or are chased off -usually both- and the entire dynamics of the site/group change
4)you stew in this unpleasent almost-familiar group/site -not at all happy with the change, but not motivated to leave
5)you either get completely sick of the change and the lack of what orginally drew you to $community --or a new $community presents itself. You leave the old community and you're back at number one again.

Drift is the biggest killer... but it's hard to avoid... generally it's the equivalent of people moving house in meatspace.

On the internet people generally just get busy and drop out of sight for a while... if enough people have that happen all at once, the community changes...

Maybe it's just good fortune, but most of the communities I've been in haven't had a big troll/crapflood problem, so not many have been chased off... although personality conflicts are always a possibility...

and in all of them, drift and personality conflicts are the big doozies. A healthy community can fight off trolling (and will have measures in place to delete crapflooding), but trolling thrives on communities that have already hit the decomposistion stage....

...not that I'm telling you anything you didn't already know. ;)

personality confilcts are the big problem in small communities...
Drift I guess I feel like I have come to accept in some way.. seeing the analogy with real life.. it's just unavoidable really... not to say I don't dream of things being different, but I guess I don't know that it really is possible...

There's one I've been in since 1999, and there's people there from the early 90s (internet, not web), and it still works. Mind you, it's a single issue community, or rather, it's a newsgroup, but the dynamics work.

he creates an account and is nice and friendly about it.

then he posts something about what a victim he is and how trollaxor's kids have mistreated him.

people don't do anything about it because they say he hasn't done anything.

trollaxor's kids show up and crapflood the site until someone does something about it.

the editors get rid of trollaxor's kids accounts and if they're smart, they get rid of vlad too.

then vlad gets a new account (or not, in this case) and does it again.

is vlad a victim? is he being hounded?

the answer: who cares? he is just one person and he brings it on himself. the real victims are the users whose site gets crapflooded.

Let's get this straight - I am NOT a crapflooder. I do not crapflood. I used to run a website that was a haven for anyone, where the rules were far more relaxed than they are on slashdot, kuro5hin, or husi. Almost anyone could post anything they wanted to. A few, notably SEVERAL people who left to form Adequacy, and the infamous WIPO Troll, created a topic on the site called 'suitable target' which was used to post about sites that were 'target rich environments' for trolls or crap flooding.

I did not censor this, at first. Later (like, after people started calling my sick relatives in the middle of the night) I put a stop to such action, but only after the persistant harassment of my family started. The vast majority of the people responsible for this set of events, left for AQ, and the DoS attacks started.

Through all of this, I didn't crapflood a SINGLE FUCKING WEBSITE and yet, to this day, people like you claim that I did, with no proof what-so-ever (excuse me, EVAR) and act like I eat small babies.

All I've ever wanted to do here, was get along, and enjoy myself. People who bring prejudice with them from the outside, only contaminate this site with outside problems.

I'll be nice to you if you return the favor.

but there is one thing i do know: crapflooders follow you around, crapflood the site you've staked out, and you ask them for more, just as you have in this diary.

to put it another way, you didn't close down the "suitable targets" section. you took it off your site and placed on your back. now you carry it with you everywhere you go.

it doesn't matter how nice you are or how much of a victim you are. your very presence is evidence of your malice. you come here under a name everyone knows, when you could very easily come incognito. that's what you would do if indeed you're only here to "hang out" or whatever.

that's why the editors ought to deal with you. rather than just the people you attract.

it is important for the editors to know the score here, though. the stuff that went on here a couple weeks ago (which i suspected prompted the selection of new editors) is exactly what began k5's undoing.

the editors' role is to protect the community, not to do what seems nice or adhere to some set of principles. again, such behavior killed k5.
