I'm not a programmer by georgeha (5.33 / 3) #1 Thu Nov 20, 2003 at 01:25:47 AM EST
I'm more of a debug engineer. Can all the programmers here make a complex program that breaks, so I can point fingers at the person responsible?

Yeah, sure. by komet (6.00 / 1) #2 Thu Nov 20, 2003 at 01:30:42 AM EST
In fact, we have already created a buggy program for your perusal. Here it is. Symptoms include crashing under moderate load, especially when using the search function; an excess of the gramatically dubious "I can't seem"; and general rustiness.

Needs to reference hulver.com not janes.demon....

Probably just need to re-type the same macro, I guess, and let it re-expand in the context of the new server.

Is it not working for you? by georgeha (3.00 / 0) #4 Thu Nov 20, 2003 at 01:35:22 AM EST
It works for me, but I should redo it, I suppose.

I can see it. by komet (3.00 / 0) #5 Thu Nov 20, 2003 at 01:37:39 AM EST
Do guns like that really exist? I thought all double-barreled guns had the barrels side-by-side. Wouldn't your gun cause the upper bullet to fall onto the lower one during flight? You can probably tell I'm European.

Sure do by georgeha (3.00 / 0) #8 Thu Nov 20, 2003 at 01:47:05 AM EST
Look here.

I've never shot a double barreled shotgun, but my understanding is that you rarely fire both barrels simultaneously. The trigger is usually a dual trigger, so you can fire one barrel at a time.

in cases where you would fire both barrels (on purpose), you'd be using shot, not slugs.

Suck it

I think it's a temporary thing by gazbo (3.00 / 0) #9 Thu Nov 20, 2003 at 01:54:47 AM EST
It was broken for a while - presumably because your image relies on hulver's home box to be up in order to send an HTTP redirect to hulver.com. Negative redundancy!

That's my guess as to why it stopped working anyhow.

hulver (or another editor ;) ought to do a global s|http://janes.demon.co.uk|http://hulver.com|gi over the entire database. There are a few comments with story or comment links that still point to janes.

I'd happily do it, although I think you may be assuming editors have significantly too much power here.

That sort of thing requires DB terminal access, and the best I can manage is story editing (not even comment editing). If there are any stories you have in mind that need fixing then I'd be happy to oblige, of course.

I'm crap at optimizing algorithms. But it's fun to watch self-declared programming geniuses start hurling their rattles out of the pram when they realise they're getting their arses kicked.

Ah well. by komet (3.00 / 0) #7 Thu Nov 20, 2003 at 01:46:02 AM EST
IMHO, the key word in PFC is FUN. Pity some people on K5 lost sight of that.

That was why I enjoyed tmoertel's "lightning fast pfc", as it was fast, lighthearted and accessible, and nobody took it seriously. Even though I only entered a joke entry, it was still good fun.

fun, interesting and not suck up too many hours. The past few PFCs were just outlandish in time requirements and what not.

I agree completely by komet (5.00 / 1) #12 Thu Nov 20, 2003 at 02:11:51 AM EST
which is why I structured the poll around the amount of time people would be willing to put in.

I didn't participate in any of the Fun Challenges on K5 - and I'm not much more than an occasional lurker here - but I can program (more or less) and am likely to have enough spare time on my hands to do such stuff once Uni's finished and exams are over (which is to say, next Monday). So bring on the HuSi PFC's!

Heh, and we talk about the falling attention span of our kids...

I'd imagine most HuSsies are >25 and the longest we're up for is 30 mins of coding!

Although I suspect this may be because we have other things to be doing.

I'd like to think by komet (3.00 / 0) #21 Thu Nov 20, 2003 at 07:49:13 AM EST
that it's less due to attention span and more to do with actually having a life...

I agree. I'm a college student. And I really don't do too much that involves having a life. It's more peaceful that way though.
