Actually, Guns, Germs, and Steel wasn't that good either. The subject is, and the examples shown, but Diamond's writing gets a bit tiring after a while.

Be nice to see what Simon Winchester or Charlie Pellegrino could do with the same ideas.

He is painstakingly thorough, and belabours the point.  Admittedly not qualities conducive to entertainment, but given the subject matter, it seems appropriate.

from the examples in GGS. Also, if you realize how fast you can grow a forest suitable for particleboard, nearly all the examples (No Trees) aren't modern dangers.
