I started playing when 2E came out, but from what I've seen of 1E books, it wasn't that big of a change, just a bit more organized.  You can use 1E and 2E books together without too much effort.

The changes that 3E brought were far more profound, like using the d20 vs DC mechanic for virtually all task resolution, Armor Class improving by going up instead of down, all classes using the same XP table, and free(er) multiclassing, to name a few.

The changes that are happening with 4E are taking the game even further from what you are probably familiar with.
