I make an appearance every now and then, when I'm in the area, which isn't very often since I stopped working for Unisuck.

Could you define "them" for me? I don't think I ever would get myself into playing 40K, or any other game where my ability to play is directly proportional to money spent. I don't have the time to prepare for that kind of game, either.

At least with D&D, I can mooch off other book owners in the game to build a character. Not that I have the time for that either, sadly. Haven't played in over 3 years.

Like I said, I'm only interested in painting minis for the sake of painting minis. I buy minis purely on how they look, not on their stats (or even what game they belong to, for that matter). Once it's painted, it stays on the shelf. I worry about handling them just to dust, let alone carting them around.

or close to it. I would have fun, but getting 4 hours a month to game is hard enough, I can't imagine 4 hours a week.

I still have my old AD&D books, they're not worth selling on ebay.

I still remember what a shock it was adjusting to 2nd edition. Best part of D&D, for me anyway, was hanging out after the game standing around outside under the starts talking about this, that and the other thing.

There is no more degenerate kind of state than that in which the richest are supposed to be the best.

I started playing when 2E came out, but from what I've seen of 1E books, it wasn't that big of a change, just a bit more organized. You can use 1E and 2E books together without too much effort.
The changes that 3E brought were far more profound, like using the d20 vs DC mechanic for virtually all task resolution, Armor Class improving by going up instead of down, all classes using the same XP table, and free(er) multiclassing, to name a few.
The changes that are happening with 4E are taking the game even further from what you are probably familiar with.
