Could you define "them" for me? I don't think I ever would get myself into playing 40K, or any other game where my ability to play is directly proportional to money spent. I don't have the time to prepare for that kind of game, either.
At least with D&D, I can mooch off other book owners in the game to build a character. Not that I have the time for that either, sadly. Haven't played in over 3 years.[ Parent ]

The changes that 3E brought were far more profound, like using the d20 vs DC mechanic for virtually all task resolution, Armor Class improving by going up instead of down, all classes using the same XP table, and free(er) multiclassing, to name a few.
The changes that are happening with 4E are taking the game even further from what you are probably familiar with.[ Parent ]
