I wonder why it works better in portrait format, though. Is it related to the way the shells are arranged, or the way the depth of field helps you focus on the orange shell, or something else?

I think I like the portrait format because it's unexpected with this subject matter.

Also n.b. rdskutter's comments on depth of field. My comment in that vein would be that I'm slightly uncomfortable with the lack of focus to the lower left. It warps the composition for me because I expect that large shell supporting the red one to be in focus. But that's hardly a big deal.
