also I'd love to know more about how one goes about "Getting it so as it sounds moderately polished on every sound system on which a person might be listening to it", After a few complaints of some of my songs' mixes (which I may have agreed with but to a far lesser extent). I tried listening to a few of them on our kitchen stereo and was blown away by how much worse some of them sounded (all the complaints made perfect sense though), vocals dominating everything really variable sound levels etc.

But those issues seem almost unapparent on my headphones.

It's a complex problem by yicky yacky (4.00 / 2) #24 Tue Nov 27, 2007 at 10:19:04 AM EST

and the solutions are almost always an unsatisfactory compromise of one sort or other. It's often the case that, in order to make something sound better on one type of equipment, you have to make it sound worse on something else. It's pretty unsatisfying. I'll do a diary in the next few days discussing the problems I usually have and what I usually do (but often don't do for MFCs, just because it's so much hassle) to try and solve them. We might be able to get some sort of "tips exchange" going.

I'd love some tips.  Even though the guitar is still firmly locked up in the case for the foreseeable.

What kind of headphones are they? by 606 (4.00 / 1) #26 Tue Nov 27, 2007 at 11:28:28 AM EST
I use Sony MDR-V500's which are pretty decent "monitor" headphones. They are quite muddy in the bass, so that's usually where my mixing falls flat.

Then I burn my mix onto a CD, listen to it on my stereo, and go back and tweak some more. It's never quite good enough.

Headphones by TPD (4.00 / 2) #27 Tue Nov 27, 2007 at 11:57:09 AM EST
SENNHEISER (HD 205), not picked for any particular reason beyond I needed some, and that's what the shop had.

Senns are good headphones by 606 (4.00 / 2) #28 Tue Nov 27, 2007 at 01:26:58 PM EST
For listening, anyway. I haven't tried mixing with them.

I too have Sennheisers by Herring (4.00 / 3) #30 Tue Nov 27, 2007 at 02:01:33 PM EST
And when listening to all the MFC tracks on "normal" volume, I realised my mix was arse.

But I'm not about to do anything about it.

I feel that future tracks could be improved with a TPD guitar solo though. What's your weapon of choice for recording? I have been using Tracktion because for £30, it kicks arse.

Cubase LE by TPD (4.00 / 1) #35 Tue Nov 27, 2007 at 05:22:59 PM EST
not because it kicks arse (because it's so far away from kicking arse it's SCARY!), but I did get it free with my pedal/audio interface thing.

Because 3.0 is out. Not sure if they're still selling it.

For my so-called mastering process by skippy (4.00 / 2) #33 Tue Nov 27, 2007 at 03:19:44 PM EST
I am fortunate to have a pair of crappy speakers as the monitors in my home studio.  Sure, I use some nice Fostex T40RPs to make sure I'm generally happy with the mix, but then I turn it up on the speakers.  After toying with it so that it doesn't totally suck ass on them, I burn a CD and haul it out to the car, to give it a listen on my very mediocre OEM stereo.  After that I throw in in the DVD player on our home stereo, which isn't an amazing piece of work, either.

If it sounds good enough that I don't feel like re-mastering it, then I call it the final mix and move on.  Suffice to say, one pass was good enough when I mixed my track.
