Judges by yicky yacky (4.00 / 1) #3 Fri Oct 12, 2007 at 08:18:45 AM EST

have traditionally been the highest-paid civil servants -- higher even than the PM at senior scales -- the rationale being that this is to put them beyond the temptations of bribery.

It's a good wheeze.

Normally the US leads on pay, but UK judges get about 50-100% more than their USian brethren.

Our doctors are as well off as in the US, our nurses are richer and our teachers are richer.

Of course, per capita, we'll spend a lot less on judges, with quite a lot more emphasis on arbitration and regulation for legal disputes, and most crime being tried in magistrates courts.

Judges are elected. In Pennsyltucky, where I live, they make the same as state representatives (i.e., our state congressmen) - which is still half what he's making, IIRC.

Heck, IIRC, it's a lot more than our national Congresscritters earn.

US salaries have sunk by anonimouse (2.00 / 0) #7 Fri Oct 12, 2007 at 09:32:49 AM EST
as a result of the exchange rate heading south. The $:£ rate was about 1.40:1.00; it's now 2.00:1.00, making our earnings look good in dollar terms.

judge income by clover kicker (2.00 / 0) #9 Fri Oct 12, 2007 at 10:14:45 AM EST
Just remember these guys were all successful lawyers before they became judges. How much do you think they make while lawyering?

Becoming a judge requires a pay cut, which is balanced with prestige, better work hours and maybe even a sense of civic duty.

But all the robes and wigs in the world won't entice a qualified lawyer to work for $100k.
