attention signage infidel by Kellnerin (4.00 / 1) #6 Mon Jun 05, 2006 at 02:50:33 PM EST
J and I have a long-standing irritation with whoever composes the messages displayed on the scrolling marquee signs at North Station and other fine commuter rail locations. For example, during the monsoons of May 2006, there would be messages such as:
ATTENTION: DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER CONDITIONS TRAIN 206 THE 8:10 DEPARTURE FROM BOSTON IS RUNNING 10 TO 15 MIN'S LATE WE APOLOGIZE FOR THE INCONVENIENCE
Of course, since these messages scroll along at a glacial pace, no matter what your reading skills may be, your reading speed is throttled by the marquee crawl. And of course Murphy would dictate that one would first glimpse the sign at about "GIZE FOR THE INCONVENIENCE" so as to have to sit through the whole "INCLEMENT WEATHER" nonsense before getting to the "10-15 MIN'S" part which is not only the most vital bit of information, but also the bit with the egregious use of the greengrocer's apostrophe.

Anyway, we complain about this kind of thing to each other at lunch, after we have gotten in to work 10-15 minutes late due to the inclement weather.

"later" meant either "when you walk around the corner" or "oatmeal."
