I am going thru "decision Making time" with mine also..he is aging and in some discomfort..unable to get up or down, I am giving him about another week and new meds to see if they help him any..as most dogs, they are part of your family..

About 10 years ago my parents had to put down their first dog--the "practice baby". We still miss her.
Of course, I am doing my best to make sure her deep-seated disapproval of everything lives on.
